COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SEALING COMPOUND (ELASTOMERIC JOINT SEALANT)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description, for all federal agencies.
This description covers two types and two grades, and three classes of elastomeric, cold applied joint sealants for sealing, caulking, or glazing operations of buildings, plazas and decks for vehicular or pedestrian use, and types of construction other than highway and airfield pavements and bridges.
1. Salient characteristics:
1.1 The sealant shall conform to the applicable requirements of ASTM C 920 – Elastomeric Joint Sealants, except as modified below:
1.1.1 Modification to ASTM C 920:
(a) Add a class of sealant as follows –“Class 50 – A sealant that when tested for adhesion and cohesion under cyclic movement (8.8) shall withstand an increase and decrease of at least 50 percent of the joint width as measured at the time of application, and in addition, meet all the requirements of this specification.”
1.1.2 (b) Color. Change to the “The color of the sealant, after curing for 14 days in in a laboratory controlled at a temperature of 23 +/- 20C and 50 +/- 5 percent relative humidity, shall be a general match to the color specified (ASTM D 1729)”.
1.1.3 (c) Hardness. Sealants shall have hardness readings of not less than 15 nor more than 50. (ASTM C 661)
2. Quality Assurance Provision: The products provided shall meet the salient characteristics of this commercial item description, conform to the producer’s own drawing, specification, standards, and quality assurance practices and be the same product offered for sale in the commercial market. The government reserves the right proof of such conformance.
3. Regulatory materials. The contractor shall utilize recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable.

4. Packaging, packing, and marking. The items shall be packaged in accordance with normal commercial practice and packed to assure acceptance by common carrier and provide product protection
